A Celebration of Contemporary Australian Music

Join the Canberra Choral Society and the National Capital Orchestra for an all-Australian concert featuring the works of Carl Vine AO, Matthew Hindson AM and Graeme Koehne AO. Commencing with a pre-concert talk by Carl Vine, who will be present at the concert and whose works are central to the program, enjoy an exploration of his Choral Symphony and the Canberra Premiere of Wonders for choir and orchestra, featuring soloists Penelope Mills and Christopher Hillier who starred in the World Premiere last September.

Opening the concert is the Canberra Premiere of Koehne’s Tivoli Dances, showcasing selections from his acclaimed ballet score. Hear the National Capital Orchestra encapsulate enthusiastically some of the lively jazz and sentimental ballad themes from this gorgeous work. Vine’s Choral Symphony is at times richly scored, demonstrating the talent of one of Australia’s foremost composers.

The second half features two additional Canberra Premieres. Hindson’s epic It is Better to be Feared than Loved, based on writings by Machiavelli, demonstrates the full energy of a combined choir and orchestra. Wonders, based on a text by Walt Whitman, showcases two of Australia’s finest soloists, intermingled with melodious punctuation from the orchestra and chorus.

As Vine notes for Wonders, “It is hard not to get swept up in the boundless beauty that the poet finds in the simple things that surround us.” Hear the Canberra Choral Society and the National Capital Orchestra do just that. Be swept away by an evening of spectacular Australian music by some of our most influential composers.
