Visual Literacy – A Picture Tells a Thousand Words

From the moment we open our eyes, we are receiving information about the world we view.

Whether we’re looking around a room we’re in, paying attention to the clothes someone is wearing, or noticing the colour of the sky at a particular time in the day, we see, we think, we feel, we interpret. For illustrators, we use this language to tell a story, to share ideas, play with emotions, and make a book come to life.

In this exciting interactive workshop for young people, children’s book illustrator, artist and Bundjalung woman Charmaine Ledden-Lewis (Illustrator of Born to Run, Cathy Freeman, Penguin Books 2021) will showcase the art of drawing with soft pastels.

The OUR YOUNG WORDS session will explore imagination, interpretation, light, colour, composition, perspective, and detail. With Charmaine, participants will explore the world of book making and the importance of diversity and inclusion being represented in picture books with the hope of empowering young people to overcome self-doubt when being creative.
