A single mum, a teenage daughter, and a new life in a regional town where neither quite fits. Billie is 16 and restless, navigating the chaos of adolescence. Mum, meanwhile, is spinning into a rebellion of her own — in the sweaty, rough, and radical world of roller derby.

It's always been just the two of them. Them against the world. Them dancing in the supermarket. Them getting the hell out after the 'Very Bad Thing'. Now, in this strange new place, Billie's anxieties are manifesting in unnerving ways — and Mum's chaotic energy, as fun as it is, isn't helping with the 'staying in one place' thing — or the bills.

2024 Scotsman First Fringe Award winner Virginia Gay (Calamity Jane) returns with this boisterous mother-daughter story, directed by Clare Watson, where theatre, roller derby, live punk band, and immersive spectacle collide.

Mama Does Derby is a no-holds-barred riot of reinvention and reckoning. About falling down, getting back up, and befriending your demons. This is theatre that hits different.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia its principal arts investment and advisory body and the Major Festivals Initiative, in association with the Confederation of Australian International Arts Festivals Inc., commissioned by Adelaide Festival, Brisbane Festival and Sydney Festival.
