About
The MCG is more than just a stadium. It’s a meeting place for generations past, present and future. A place where greatness is born.
Established in 1853 by the Melbourne Cricket Club who still manage the precinct today, the MCG has been home to some of the greatest moments in sporting history. It was the birthplace of Test cricket in 1877 and one-day international cricket in 1971, and has been the spiritual home of Australian Rules Football (AFL) since 1859.
The MCG was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games and 2006 Commonwealth Games and has also hosted international acts including The Rolling Stones, Madonna and Eminem – whose 2019 performance in front of 80,708 fans was the highest concert attendance for both Eminem and the MCG.
In March 2020, the MCG hosted the Final of the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup which Katy Perry entertain a 86,174 strong crowd before Australia lifted the trophy after an enthralling match against India. The crowd attendance was the largest for a professional women’s sport event in Australia and for women’s cricket globally.
